Nokia 8 and Nokia 3 get February security update

HMD has started pushing out a new updates to its Nokia 8 and Nokia 3 smartphones. Weighing in at around 87MB and 80MB, respectively, these are security updates that bring along Android fixes for the month of February.

It’s worth highlighting this latest patch includes fix for a critical security vulnerability present in Media framework. A remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted file.

While the Nokia 8 update is currently rolling out to units running Android 8.0 Oreo stable in India and Jordan, the Nokia 3 update is only hitting units in India at the moment.

HMD Global renews Nokia’s Xpress-on trademark

In an interesting and intriguing move, HMD Global has recently renewed the Nokia Xpress-on trademark under its ownership. This was used many eons ago for replaceable front and back covers, once a staple feature of a large number of Nokia handsets.

The Xpress-on trademark is classified as follows: “accessories for communications apparatus, namely microphones, speakers, coloured covers, housings, cases, antennas, batteries, battery chargers”. That list basically reveals what HMD Global could use it for – while we assume replaceable rear covers aren’t coming back anytime soon, the company could release phone cases using this brand.

The newly re-registered trademark is valid until 2028, so HMD Global surely has some time on its hands to decide precisely what products to call Xpress-on.

Nokia 3310 4G can make an LTE-powered Wi-Fi hotspot

HMD unveiled its third version of the reborn Nokia 3310 – but this 4G model is an odd duck. It’s LTE connectivity is a boon and it has Wi-Fi, which can be used to create a hotspot to share the data connection with other devices.

It’s odd, however, because it runs YunOS, an incompatible fork of Android. Don’t expect to run anything but preloaded apps, though (there’s no mention of Yun’s app store). Probably for the best since it’s working with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of storage, too little for even Android Go.

Anyway, the Nokia 3310 4G is a single SIM phone with VoLTE support. It will be available in China and supports TD-LTE, the possibility of an international version is up in the air.

The small battery (1,200mAh) promises 12 days of standby and up to 15 hours of talk time on 2G, but that quickly drops to 5 hours if you’re using VoLTE. The FM radio can play for up to 31 hours. The specs don’t say how long the phone lasts when used as a hotspot.

The rest is pretty much the same as on the previous models – a 2.4” screen (240 x 320px), 2MP camera with LED flash and a microSD slot to expand the storage.

The Nokia 3310 4G will be available in China starting in late February, we don’t know the price yet.

A note about YunOS: while it’s a fork of Android, it tries to do what Firefox OS (and WebOS before that) attempted. It seems that native Android apps are supported, but compatibility for individual apps is another matter. YunOS focuses on apps built on web technologies and has a strong focus on cloud integration (e.g. it can sync data from your phone to your computer).

Nokia 5 Oreo update starts seeding

HMD ticked another phone off the Oreo update list – the Nokia 5. Meanwhile, the Nokia 6 update has expanded to people with the TA-1021 model (the global one).

If your Nokia 5 hasn’t notified you of the update, you can check manually. Do keep in mind that this is a staged rollout and it may be a couple of days before it arrives for your exact model.

This leaves the Nokia 3 and Nokia 2, which will start beta testing Oreo soon and then that will be HMD’s full lineup.

Oreo beta for Nokia 3 imminent, says HMD

HMD Global has revealed the Android Oreo beta build for the Nokia 3 will be available very soon. CPO Juho Sarvikas took to Twitter to confirm that the Nokia 3 Beta Labs program is just around the corner.

Also but will go straight to 8.1 to get memory optimization features as it is a 1GB RAM device. Beta Labs right around the corner.

As you can see, the exec also confirmed that the Nokia 2 will directly be updated to Android 8.1. Just in case you aren’t aware, recently, the Nokia 8 started receiving the Oreo 8.1 update. Most of the other Nokia-branded HMD smartphones have also already got Oreo.

Another Nokia 10 sketch hints at penta-camera setup, of sorts

The plot thickens regarding the eagerly-anticipated Nokia 10 and its alleged penta-camera setup. To be clear, beyond a leaked Snapdragon 845 future device list and a few crude schematics, at this point, no concrete evidence has been brought forward to prove HMD is even working on a Nokia 10, let alone one with a revolutionary camera.

That being said, however, the various bits and pieces do seem to be aligning suspiciously well, forming an overall picture. The latest development comes in the form of a rather detailed sketch of the back side of the alleged Nokia 10. Its source is an industry insider, apparently basing the drawing on information, as well as an interesting ZEISS patent for a mobile multi-lens camera solution.

As described by the paper, the technology employs an array of additional lenses (7), with different focal lengths, mounted on a rotating lens base (10), which sits between the camera sensor (9) and a normal fixed lens (6).

According to the sketch artist, this setup is placed within the round camera module on the back, with the lenses themselves rotating around and repositioning above the main camera in the middle of the module. The Nokia 10 is also said to feature a secondary camera, on the very top of said module. Its supplementary features (wider field of view, bokeh, etc.) are still unclear.

As for the rest of the Nokia 10 hardware, as previously mentioned, it will likely be powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset and could feature an 18:9 display. Design-wise, the source claims it will share many of the traits of the Nokia 9 – also unannounced. Most notably, a 3D glass back and front.

The device featured on the sketch on the right of the Nokia 10 does match up with earlier back plate and caseleaks attributed to the Nokia 9, giving even more merit to the insider info.

Sources suggest the Nokia 10 could arrive as early as IFA 2018 in Berlin this September. Meaning, there is still some waiting to be done and likely more info on the horizon. Even so, there might very well be a Nokia 7 Plusto look forward to at MWC 2018 in just a few days.

Nokia 10 to come with penta-camera setup

Nokia delivered some of the best cameraphones through the years dating back to the N95, the 808 PureView and the Lumia 1020 . According to a leak from the Chinese social network Baidu, a concept phone with five lenses positioned in a circle, coupled with a LED flash, might be the next glorious installment in that series.

Sources suggest the phone will be named Nokia 10 and could arrive as early as IFA 2018 in Berlin this September. Although we are thin on the details, the design also reveals the upcoming phone will have a fingerprint scanner on the back, right below the revolver barrel-like camera setup.

The same source also mentions Snapdragon 845, which in theory can connect up to 7 different cameras with support for up to 32 MP, 4K video recording and dual phase detection.
