Huawei P20 Lite now leaks in live images

Huawei is announcing its flagship P20 (or P11, the naming isn’t 100% known at the moment) on March 27 at a special event in Paris. While the P20 and P20 Plus / Pro are expected to come with three rear cameras, the entry-level model in the line, the P20 Lite, will stick with two. We’ve seen this phone get certified by the FCC yesterday, and a few hours ago some 360-degree renders of it were outed based on CAD schematics.

To add to that barrage of P20 Lite leaks, we now have some live images to show you. They show the iPhone X-inspired vertical arrangement for the dual rear cameras and their hump, as well as the notch at the top of the screen, which is smaller than in Apple’s most expensive phone.

The P20 Lite will have a screen approximately 5.8″ in size with 18:9 aspect ratio, according to a person who has seen it (and who is the source of the pictures). That contradicts the FCC’s measurements which mentioned a 2,280×1,080 resolution and 6.1″ size, with 19:9 aspect ratio. It may just be that the aforementioned person assumed he or she was looking at an 18:9 screen, since those are very popular with Chinese smartphone makers. To complicate things even further, those 3D renders from earlier today talked about a 5.7″ display.

Moving on, its dimensions will be approximately 148 x 71 x 7.2 mm. Its construction should be of the metal and glass sandwich variety, with a pale pink like color depicted here and a black version expected too. There’s a USB Type-C port on the bottom, where a 3.5mm headset jack also lives. Unfortunately that may not be a feature of the higher-end P20 models.

The Huawei P20 Lite should have a 2,900 mAh battery as per the FCC, and as you can see its fingerprint sensor is on the back. It’s likely to run Android Oreo from day one, underneath Huawei’s EMUI 8.0. At the helm we’ll either see the flagship Kirin 970 SoC, or an updated version of the Kirin 659.

Huawei P20 Lite with a notched 19:9 screen goes through the FCC

Screen notches – not just for expensive flagships anymore. FCC certified (and described in good detail) what could be the Huawei P20 Lite (model name ANE-LX1). It will have an extra tall 19:9 screen, including the notch.

The screen has a resolution of 2,280 x 1,080px and (if we’re reading the schematic right) the diagonal should be around 6.1”. The phone itself will measure 148 x 70mm.

On the back of the phone is a dual camera (vertically oriented). Of course, the FCC doesn’t list the camera resolution. A fingerprint reader is not included in the schematic.

Additional info about the P20 Lite revealed by the FCC includes the battery capacity and charging capabilities – 2,900mAh Li-ion battery and 9V @ 2A adapter.

This isn’t part of the group of three Huawei phones that went through TENAA, it’s a new device. So, while the big P20 isn’t coming to the MWC, perhaps the P20 Lite is?

Three new Huawei phones pass through TENAA

A total of three new Huawei phones were unearthed by the Chinese TENAA. All of them look to have 18:9 screens and metal backs with dual cameras.

The first two are the FLA-AL00 and FLA-TL10, which could turn out to be the Nova 3 and Nova 3 Plus, successors to the Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus.

Both have a dual camera on the back as well as a dual camera on the front.

At first glance there doesn’t seem to be a visual difference between the two models, although logic points to different screen sizes, at least.

Next up is the serial number LDN-TL00, which could prove to be either a Huawei T3 or Y5 (2018). It too packs a dual camera on the back but seems to have a single selfie snapper on the front.

It also looks quite similar to the mysterious Honor device that made an appearance on the same site yesterday.

Huawei to hold an MWC 2018 event after all

Last month we learned that Huawei will not unveil its P11 flagship (or P20, the name is not yet confirmed) at MWC 2018. Today the company announced on its Weibo page that it will still hold an event in Barcelona and announce new products.

Huawei is one of the few companies that posted a two-digit growth in tablet market (the other big player being Amazon), so a new Mediapad might be on its way.

The company might also announce the official arrival of its payment system Huawei Pay in Europe or a new smartwatch, a successor of the last-year’s Watch 2.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro goes on pre-order in the US with $150 gift card

Despite its much publicized failure to have it offered by carriers, Huawei is still launching the Mate 10 Pro in the US, albeit only in unlocked form. Starting today you can pre-order the handset from Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and B&H. It should also be available in Microsoft stores.

The Mate 10 Pro is priced at $799, but to sweeten the deal you will receive a $150 gift card which you can use at the retailer you chose to purchase the phone from. This offer is only available to those who pre-order. The device will start shipping on February 18, so to get that gift card you will need to pull the trigger on or before February 17.

You can pick between Midnight Blue and Titanium Grey color versions at the moment, with Mocha Brown supposedly coming soon.

On February 18, the Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design will land in the US as well. This $1,255 smartphone will be sold by Amazon, Microsoft, Newegg, and B&H.

Oreo for Honor 9 and Honor 8 Pro begins rolling

A couple of devices from Huawei’s sub-brand Honor are getting a new update. Specifically, the Honor 9 and Honor 8 Pro are getting the EMUI 8.0 update which brings along Android Oreo.

As for changes, all major Oreo goodies should be there, including picture-in-picture mode and notification dots. The update is currently hitting units in the UK, although we expect it will be available in other key markets sooner than later.

Huawei P11/P20 officially coming on March 27

The mystery has been revealed: Huawei isn’t introducing its new flagship smartphones at MWC next month. Instead, it will wait until March 27, when it’s holding a special event in Paris. That’s when the P11 or P20 family should become official – we still aren’t sure exactly which name will be used.

Regardless of that, it is expected to comprise of at least three members, according to recent rumors: a P11/P20, a P11/P20 Plus, and a P11/P20 Lite. A while back there was also a P11/P20 Pro rumored, even allegedly arriving on the market with an iPhone X-like notch.

Keep in mind that at least some of the new models have been said to come with not two but three rear cameras, alongside top of the line specs of course. We hope to see at least one 18:9 screen, and the Kirin 970 AI-infused chipset will probably be at the helm in all but the Lite version.

Oreo update hitting unlocked Huawei Mate 9 in US

The Huawei Mate 9 has started getting a new update in the US. Currently hitting GSM networks-compatible International unlocked units in the region (MHA-L29 and L09), it’s major update that brings along Android Oreo.

The change-log for the update isn’t yet available, although we assume all major Oreo goodies should be included. As is usually the case with OTA roll outs, it may take time for the update to hit your device, if not already.

Huawei P11 name trademarked by the company

We’ve had some back and forth on the next Huawei P-series phone and it’s starting to feel like Huawei itself hasn’t made the decision yet. First, the company trademarked P20, now it trademarked P11.

The application was filed in the US, the UK, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other countries. The Huawei P20 trademark was filed in the US only and that was months ago.

The company’s web team was also caught preparing info pages for Huawei P11 and P12, making it more likely that Huawei will continue counting upward without skipping any numbers. The P12 will probably have to wait for next year, though there won’t be any shortage of P phones – there could be as many as three models (not counting the inevitable P11 Lite).

Anyway, the application mentions phones, of course, but “smartwatch” is also pretty prominent on the List of goods and services. Huawei’s Honor Band may be due for a rebranding.

Huawei video teases new fast charge tech – 48% in 5 minutes… but there’s a catch

Huawei’s Watt Lab is talking up a next-generation quick charging technology, which could fill a phone’s battery to 48% in just 5 minutes. The setup shown in the video is a bit unconventional, however.

The good stuff starts around the 50 second mark. You can see that the battery has many more connectors than a battery you find in phones today. Subdividing the battery and charging each piece separately is not a new trick but it sure is effective.

But notice that you don’t charge the battery inside the phone – instead the battery is taken out and charged in an external device. We wouldn’t object to removable batteries making a comeback, but we’re not holding our breath.

To be fair, removable batteries were pretty standard in 2015 – which is when this video was first published. Check out an article by Computerworld, which even features a screen cap. The article also mentions the battery capacity (which the video conveniently omits), 3,000mAh.

It would be cool to see this tech hit the market, but it has been over two years now. Is Huawei hyping it up for the MWC? One could hope, but perhaps one would save themselves some disappointment if they didn’t.
